Lukasz: „I have to change rackets”

PAP: You’ve been playing with Fischer rackets all your life. Why are you testing different rackets?

Lukasz: I’m testing new rackets because Fischer fell into bankruptcy and was sold. They stopped producing new rackets and this is why I’m forced to look for new ones. I’m currently testing Donnay rackets but generally my new racket must make my serve bigger.

It seems that tennis has become slower recently. Big servers didn’t go far at the Australian Open…

Lukasz: There are a couple of factors involved. Windy conditions affect accuracy when serving. Heavier balls bounce slower and tennis players are getting better and better on return. Some tournament organizers, in Basel and Vienna for example, have made a decision to change the surface of the courts. It’s difficult now to win points after two or three shots.

So will you try to play more from the baseline and give up your offensive game?

Lukasz: I don’t think so. I’m going to keep playing aggressive tennis and get to the net as quickly as possible. I’m a bit too old to play from the baseline against 19-year-old Spaniards. I’m not strong enough for that. I’ll do my best to play more hardcourt tournaments.

What are your plans for the weeks to come?

Lukasz: Zagreb next week, then one week off in Prague and Rotterdam. Later, Memphis and Acapulco. From Mexico I’ll travel to Indian Wells and Miami, ATP World Tour 1000 Masters tournaments.

Don’t you think the challenge is too big as all the tournaments you mentioned have a strong field?

Lukasz: I’m aware of the fact that I need a bit of luck in the draw, but when you win a match or two in big tournaments, you get more points and climb in the ranks. And you don’t have to play so many matches. Last year I played a lot and ended up with a wrist injury in summer. This year my coach Jan Stoces and I came up with a different strategy. I’ll try to climb as high as possible in the rankings to make it to the Olympic Games in London.

What do you think about your results when teaming up with Marcel Granollers?

Lukasz: We lost twice in the opening rounds, in Sydney and Melbourne, but we were close. We hadn’t played enough before, but I believe that we will team up again one day. To be honest, doubles play is not my priority at the moment. I’m focusing only on singles matches and my road to the Olympic Games.
