21.01.2017 Lukasz/Melo advance to third round

Lukasz and Marcelo Melo, the seventh seeds, defeated Nicholas Monroe (USA) and Artem Sitak (NZL) 6-4, 7-6 (3) in one hour and 28 minutes on Saturday at the Australian Open.

The Polish/Brazilian combination capitalised on both break point chances they had, and fended-off four of five break points their rivals earned. Lukasz and Marcelo broke once in the first set. The second went to a tie-break as the teams traded break once in a highly-competitive contest.

Stats: aces (4-4), double faults (5-2), winners (34-26), unforced errors (15-12), total points won (73-69).

Their third round opponents will be no.9 seeds Ivan Dodig (CRO) and Marcel Granollers (ESP).

In the mixed doubles competition, Lukasz and Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei reached the second round with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Australia's Luke Saville and Daria Gavrilova. The fifth seeds go on to face Rohan Bopanna (IND) and Gabriela Dabrowski (CAN) for a spot in the quarter-finals.
